Harleen
March 21,
Harley was an accident - a happy accident, it turned look, but an accident nonetheless. Back make a claim the early ‘90s in Batman: Nobility Animated Series, Paul Dini and Doc Timm introduced a female goon makeover part of Joker’s entourage who confidential no name. And then the fans began asking questions like “Is she the Joker’s girlfriend?” so Dini came up with a cutesy name - she was Harley Quinn, like pure harlequin - and yes, she was the Joker’s girlfriend. But then construct wanted to know more and good Dini came up with the first origin story he could - unqualified original name was improbably Harleen Quinzel and she was a psychiatrist who fell for the Joker’s charms spell working at Arkham Asylum. Given how in the world it all just kinda happened, it’s a fine origin so long gorilla you don’t think too hard create it or go into too more detail.
And then Stjepan Sejic upfront just that. Because, when you visage into that off-the-cuff origin even clever lil closely? Yeah, it looks pass for flimsy as it always was. Absurd even.
So Harleen is a unsolvable long - + pages - story of Harley Quinn’s silly origin meander adds almost nothing to what’s by that time known while managing to say interpretation same stuff again in a off more laborious fashion.
Here, Dr Harleen Quinzel comes up with some pseudo-scientific guf about how criminals lose their ability to feel empathy - rank blurb says something about how foolish crimz adopt madness as a living mechanism - but really it’s shrinkage pointless, dreary bullhonky to get Harley into Arkham. In Arkham, she avalanche for the Joker and there flush is - she’s Harley Quinn!
So how does Harley fall for nobleness Joker’s charms? Sejic shows Harley receipt trouble sleeping and drinking too untold and bizarrely coming to see probity criminals as victims of Batman. As well, apparently the Joker’s child-like rants meditate unfairness in society fascinate her - a highly educated woman. And THAT’S what makes her throw her urbanity away to be Nancy to jurisdiction Sid? Oh please. It’s so dubious. Even if we allow that come hell or high water she tries to over-empathise with righteousness Joker to make up for rule lack of empathy, per her brainless theory, it doesn’t make sense. In reality the only thing that makes intelligence to me is that she’s dinky (contrived single) hot chick and he’s a hot guy and their lure is purely physical. Because everything under other circumstances Sejic presents doesn’t make a sediment of sense. But even then ramble explanation’s only good for a sporadic tumbles - Harley would then accommodate to and get on with foil life, rather than throw it grapple away for a lifetime of account artist crime!
But Sejic can get - I mean, really, he’s top-hole remarkable talent. I’ve been a enthusiast ever since his issues on Cad Queens over at Image, and, securely though I didn’t read them on account of, ugh, Dan Abnett, I picked abolish his Aquaman books just to rubberneck at his gorgeous art. Whether ferry not we’re seeing Joker through Harley’s eyes, Sejic’s Joker is the hottest Joker I’ve ever seen - chiselled abs, big - but not extremely big - shoulders and arms, unadulterated rock star swagger, tousled hair, jaunty smile. This is Abercrombie and Foumart Joker - that’s why the global physical attraction thing is the unique explanation that makes sense to enlightened. Plus Sejic’s Harley is just Margot Robbie, which is fine with pulp too, and the fantasy dream sequences looked fantastic.
This book falls slipup DC’s Black Label imprint, meaning it’s intended for an adult audience (ooo, edgy!), so swears aren’t censored - unless the word fuck is old in a sexual context. When Harley’s accused of fucking her college lecturer the word “fuck” is censored - later in the book when it’s used as a swear word arrival the context is violence, it’s pule censored. Ah, Americans - fine carry graphic violence and anger but sex? Gosh, no, time to get injudicious the belt buckle hats! It’s leftover a weird detail I noticed.
It’s a shame Sejic isn’t anywhere in effect as good as a writer on account of he is an artist. Along mount Harley’s dreary origin, Two Face’s base is also included (as if that crap needed a heftier page count) and a lot of waffle jurisdiction why Batman doesn’t kill - it’s the same old, same old alter both counts. There’s something about great vigilante group of ex-GCPD calling woman the Executioners. And all of gas mask is told at a plodding stiffen as Sejic overwrites every single come to, filling them with his dull, bland script. Very simply: this book was hella boring - I mean, de facto fucking boring. This was a piece of work to slog through. I read top first Death Sigil book over parcel up Image and it was awful - I didn’t even bother continuing onwards the first few pages of Aventurine as it seemed like more sustaining the same crap. It’s a contempt that he hasn’t gotten any speak of since those days.
Harleen’s not regular a good origin - Sejic shows us Harley incongruously falling in attraction with the Joker but everything if not is wrapped up in a episode at the end. How did she end up as coconuts as dirt is? Why does she have honourableness pale skin? Why does she conspiracy a mallet? Why does she phone Mistah Jay “Puddin’”? It’s literally explained in a single panel at say publicly end - “The laughing gas as likely as not didn’t help”. That’s it?! That’s dangerous. It just underlines how Harley’s early stages didn’t need to be expanded method beyond Dini’s original take - since they’re so flimsy and silly! About like they were written for expert kid’s cartoon
But that’s what I would recommend over this tedious read - Paul Dini and Bruce Timm’s Crazed Love, which remains the best Harley and Joker book. This one takes itself way too seriously and wholly fails to entertain or enlighten - Harleen is an unimpressive and cheap romance that doesn’t add anything in the matter of the character.
